Motie’s spell slams the door
Gudakesh Motie’s 3 for 22 was the difference in a game that never stopped moving, even when wickets fell. Barbados Tridents piled up 177 for 5 in 18 overs, and Saint Lucia Kings responded with enough intent to make it a finish, only to end on 168 for 7 and lose by 9 runs. Ackeem Auguste briefly threatened to steal it, but every time the Kings looked set to launch, Motie’s accuracy dragged the chase back into Tridents’ control.
Middle overs keep Tridents ahead
The contest was shaped most in the middle phase. After brisk powerplays (Tridents 63/2, Kings 59/2), Barbados were the side that kept scoring without bleeding momentum: 85/1 through the middle overs, anchored by the 78-run stand between Sherfane Rutherford and Rivaldo Clarke. Saint Lucia’s middle overs were slower and costlier in context at 76/3, and those two extra wickets meant their late surge had to be near-perfect. Even with a rapid 33/2 at the death, the required rate stayed just out of reach.
Rutherford sets it, Auguste answers
Rutherford’s 61 from 31 balls was the innings that built Barbados’ winning margin, turning a good start into a total that demanded constant boundary-hitting. Motie then made sure Saint Lucia couldn’t line up that hitting: his three wickets and tight lengths repeatedly broke rhythm. Auguste’s 63 off 34 kept the chase alive into the back end, but with Roston Chase’s 2 for 30 only partially slowing Barbados, the Kings were left needing one last burst that never arrived.
Pre-match edge, in-match squeeze
Saint Lucia came in with the profile of the stronger side on paper — a small Elo edge, better net run rate, and recent head-to-head success — but Barbados arrived in better touch and played like it. The Kings’ early platform didn’t translate into a clean chase because the Tridents’ spin and changes of pace forced risk in the middle overs. In a shortened 18-over game, that one slightly quieter phase mattered more than usual.
