Essex had enough on the board to ask questions, but Simpson’s 63 from 23 balls ensured Sussex answered them immediately, sealing a 6-wicket win with 24 balls remaining. Even when Essex briefly found a foothold through wickets in the middle, the chase never felt like it was drifting.

Powerplay avalanche decides it

The match was effectively won in the first six overs of Sussex’s reply. They rocketed to 79/1 in the powerplay at 13.2 an over, wiping out the value of Essex’s solid 53/0 start and putting the asking rate in permanent retreat. With that platform, Sussex could absorb the odd middle-overs breakthrough and still cruise: 113/3 through the middle phase kept them ahead of the game, leaving no need for a death-overs scramble at all.

Walter-Pepper build, Simpson finishes
