Ito-Davis all-round squeeze
Benjamin Ito-Davis set up a tense finish with a top score of 35 off 34 and then a three-wicket spell that kept Japan in the contest deep into the chase. But Hong Kong’s lower-order calm in the final stretch carried them home by four wickets with five balls remaining, 99/6 in 19.1 overs after Japan’s 95/7.
Hong Kong’s late-overs surge
The chase was decided in the last four overs, where Hong Kong scored 25 without losing a wicket at a run rate of 7.9. That acceleration flipped a pursuit that had been stuck in low gear through the middle overs (49/2) into a controlled finish, ensuring the early damage in the powerplay didn’t become terminal.
Ito-Davis, Ehsan lead spells
Ito-Davis was Japan’s standout, combining a measured 35 with 3/11 from four overs (economy 2.8) to apply constant pressure. Earlier, Hong Kong’s bowlers shaped the low-scoring game: Ehsan Khan’s 3/18 and Yasim Murtaza’s 2/16 limited Japan to 27/2 in the powerplay and prevented any decisive partnership, with Japan’s best stand only 27. Wasif’s 31 off 31 and Khan’s 26 off 32 then anchored the chase under pressure.
Powerplay wobble, then rebuild
Japan’s bowlers made the game feel smaller by taking four wickets inside the first six overs, leaving Hong Kong 25/4 and searching for stability. Shahid Wasif and Muhammad Khan provided it with the match’s best stand for Hong Kong, adding 34 to drag the chase back on track. Even as Japan kept the scoring in check through the middle phase, Hong Kong’s set batters ensured the required rate never spiralled beyond reach.
