Cruz De Oliviera breaks it open
Sebastian Cruz De Oliviera’s four-wicket burst ensured Sweden never built the kind of platform a 150-plus total demanded, and Portugal’s chase followed the same script: calm, measured, and increasingly one-sided. Chasing 144, Portugal finished 144/3 in 17.4 overs to win by 7 wickets with 14 balls remaining, with Chad Potgieter and Sharn Gomes doing the heavy lifting through the middle.
Portugal’s middle overs control
The match swung decisively in the middle phase. Sweden managed 68/3 in the middle overs at 6.7 an over, but Portugal’s bowlers squeezed boundaries and forced low-risk accumulation into mistakes. In reply, Portugal’s middle overs were the opposite: 79/2 at 7.9 an over, a steady climb that kept the asking rate under control and left only a routine finish for the final three overs.
Potgieter and Gomes finish job
Potgieter’s 42 from 37 balls provided the chase’s spine, allowing Gomes to play with freedom for his 37 off 31. With the ball, Cruz De Oliviera’s 4/25 was the standout impact, repeatedly breaking Sweden’s attempts to rebuild, while Edward Fleming’s 3/19 tightened the screws and ensured Sweden’s 143/9 was always a chaseable target.
Sweden’s starts kept stalling
Sweden’s powerplay promised more at 41/3, but the early wickets meant every partnership was a reset rather than an acceleration. Their best stand was just 25, and even a late lift at the death (34 runs) couldn’t fully compensate for the lack of a defining stand. Portugal briefly felt pressure when Sweden struck in the chase, but the 57-run partnership between Gomes and Potgieter blunted that spell and effectively decided the contest before the last four overs.
