Abhishek’s 32-ball blitz
Abhishek Sharma’s 82 off 32 ended the chase as a contest, as India overhauled 156 with 38 balls to spare to win by seven wickets. He set the tone early, clearing the infield and boundary with regularity, and then kept accelerating through the middle overs. With Ishan Kishan anchoring the other end, India’s best stand of 121 ensured the target was reduced to a formality long before the finish.
Powerplay decided the chase
The game swung decisively in India’s powerplay: 82/1 at 13.7 an over left Afghanistan chasing the match rather than defending it. That burst effectively erased the value of Afghanistan’s late push to 156, and meant India could absorb the only real wobble of the chase in the middle overs. Even after two wickets in that phase, India still scored 75/2 at 9.8 an over, keeping the finish line in sight without needing a death-overs surge.
Shapers of the result
Abhishek was the match’s defining figure, combining clean hitting with relentless tempo to claim the MVP. Arshdeep’s 3/19 from four overs set up the chase by turning Afghanistan’s start into damage control. Omarzai’s innings gave Afghanistan a platform after early losses, while Kishan’s 42 off 33 provided the stability that allowed Abhishek to keep attacking without interruption.
Afghanistan’s rebuild, then stalls
Afghanistan’s innings had two distinct halves. They stumbled to 41/4 in the powerplay, with Arshdeep Singh striking repeatedly to keep the scoring in check. The recovery came through Azmatullah Omarzai’s 65 off 44 and his 83-run partnership with Mohammad Nabi, which lifted the total through the middle overs (79/1). But once that stand ended, the final five overs produced 36/3, leaving a total India could chase at speed.
