Belgium’s death overs decisive
The match swung in Belgium’s final five overs, when they ransacked 60 runs at 15 an over after being checked through the middle. From 51 for 1 in the powerplay, Belgium slipped to 124 for 5 across the middle overs (73 for 4 in that phase), with Manmeet Koli (2 for 24) and Janitha Fernando (2 for 26) controlling the tempo. The late acceleration flipped the equation: Romania were left needing a steep rate from the outset, and that extra burst proved the difference.
Fernando shines, Belgium hold nerve
Fernando’s 38 off 23 was the standout innings of the chase and earned him MVP honours, while his four overs helped stall Belgium’s middle. Koli’s economy (6.0) also kept Belgium from running away early. For Belgium, Rahimi’s anchor role and Ahmad Khalid Ahmadzai’s 2 for 28 provided the control and breakthroughs that ultimately protected the 184 target.
Romania’s chase ebbed and flowed
Romania started behind the pace at 39 for 1 in the powerplay, but the middle overs brought them roaring back with 95 runs for 5 at 9.3 an over. A 59-run stand between Fernando and Tharindu Sandaruwan briefly swung momentum, Sandaruwan striking 31 off 15 at a strike rate over 200 to keep the asking rate manageable. The chase tightened late as wickets fell and the required rate climbed, and Belgium’s bowlers kept Romania to 42 for 3 in the last five.
