Afridi detonates record chase
Shahid Afridi turned the contest into a highlight reel, blasting Austria’s attack from ball one and never letting the tempo drop. His 156 off 61 set up Germany’s towering 308 for 1, and once Austria’s chase lost early wickets, the gap became unbridgeable. Austria did have a brief window of belief in the powerplay, but Germany’s bowlers slammed it shut, sealing a 162-run win that felt decided long before the final wicket at 15.1 overs.
Powerplay sets the ceiling
Germany effectively won the game in the first six overs of their innings. They rocketed to 97 without loss in the powerplay, turning good balls into boundary options and forcing Austria into defensive fields almost immediately. Even when a wicket finally fell in the middle overs, the scoring barely dipped: 160/1 through the middle phase kept the run rate near 16 an over and ensured Austria were chasing a number that demanded a perfect start and sustained hitting.
Afridi’s double-impact masterclass
Afridi was the match’s defining figure: his 229-run stand with Kohler-Cadmore (133 off 58) turned a strong platform into a total beyond reach. Then he returned to puncture the chase, taking 4 for 12 and ripping out momentum as Austria tried to swing their way back. Karanbir Singh’s 84 off 39 briefly lifted Austria, but once Germany struck in the middle phase, the innings unravelled too quickly to sustain that resistance.
Pre-match edges become a landslide
Germany came in with the steadier season profile and a strong head-to-head run, while Austria’s recent form suggested they could compete if they controlled the early overs. Instead, Germany’s matchup advantage with the bat showed up brutally: Afridi and Ben Kohler-Cadmore dominated lengths and denied Austria any settling period. Austria’s own powerplay (64/2) hinted at a fight, but the required rate was already spiralling, and the middle overs collapse removed any chance of a counterpunch.
