Holder shuts the door late
Jason Holder’s closing spell flipped the innings on its head, turning a competitive platform into a below-par 147/9 and paving the way for West Indies to win by 7 wickets with four balls remaining. Sri Lanka had rebuilt through a 58-run stand, but once Holder hit his lengths at the back end, the chase became about control rather than risk, and Shai Hope supplied exactly that.
West Indies’ powerplay punch
The match was effectively won in the first six overs of the chase. West Indies raced to 66/0 at 10.7 an over, forcing Sri Lanka to defend from behind for the rest of the innings. That burst meant the required rate never spiralled during the quieter middle phase (54/2 at 5.4), and even with wickets in hand, West Indies could keep the game in their tempo before finishing with 29/1 in the death.
Hope anchors, Holder headlines
Hope’s 65 off 54 was a chase of judgement, absorbing the mid-innings slowdown and ensuring the powerplay advantage wasn’t squandered. Brandon King’s 38 off 22 provided the initial thrust that broke the target’s back. Holder, named MVP, was the decisive figure with 3/18, while Shamar Joseph’s 3/29 ensured Sri Lanka never had the late-innings surge that could have pushed this beyond reach.
Sri Lanka’s fight, then fade
Sri Lanka’s innings had similar early fireworks, but the damage came with the ball: 56/3 in the powerplay left them constantly patching holes. A stabilising partnership briefly swung momentum back, yet West Indies’ seamers kept the squeeze on and the death overs bled momentum — just 22 runs for four wickets. In the chase, Sri Lanka finally found some grip through Wanindu Hasaranga, but the early deficit was too steep to erase.
