Bethell turns chase on its head
Jacob Bethell seized the decisive moment when England’s chase threatened to unravel early, then carried them home by four wickets with six balls remaining. England were 61/3 in the powerplay, but Bethell’s 78 off 46 changed the tempo and the mood. He absorbed the early damage, then began targeting the straight boundary to keep the asking rate in check. By the time he fell, the chase had been shaped; England closed out 191/6 in 19 overs.
Death-overs burst seals it
The game was won in England’s death overs, where they scored 49/1 at 14.7 an over. India’s bowlers had kept things tight through the middle (England 81/2 at 8.1), but the final five overs swung hard as Bethell and the finishers found clean contact and forced India off their lengths. That late acceleration meant England didn’t need a last-over scramble, turning a tense chase into a controlled finish.
Bethell and Curran set it up
Bethell was the match’s defining batter, combining strike rotation with timely boundary bursts to keep England ahead of the rate. Curran’s 3/33 provided the control England needed after India’s brisk start. For India, Arshdeep Singh’s 3/40 created early openings, while Axar Patel’s 1/20 was the most economical spell, but England’s late hitting ultimately overrode the pressure.
India’s innings: pace, then drag
India began with intent, racing to 65/2 in the powerplay, driven by Abhishek Sharma’s 43 off 24 and Ishan Kishan’s busier 49 off 40. The best stand, 65 between Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, gave them a platform, but England’s squeeze arrived in the middle and at the back end. Sam Curran’s three wickets broke rhythm, and India’s death phase dipped to 44/3, leaving them just short of a truly daunting total.
