Roy’s ton seals chase

Jason Roy’s 104 from 58 balls was the decisive act, flattening Sussex’s 176/7 and carrying Surrey to victory by 8 wickets with 16 balls remaining. After Sussex’s brisk start, the chase briefly had a target feel, but Roy’s control of the tempo meant Surrey were never forced into panic. The defining moment came as he accelerated beyond a run-a-ball requirement and turned the final stretch into a formality.

Middle-overs squeeze undone

Sussex’s best window was the middle phase of Surrey’s innings, but it never truly materialised. Surrey moved from 53/1 in the powerplay to 160/2 by the end of the 16th over, scoring 107/1 through the middle at 10.5 an over. That sustained rate meant the death overs were almost irrelevant: Surrey needed only 17 more and finished in 17.2. Roy’s ability to keep finding boundaries while rotating strike ensured Sussex couldn’t build the dot-ball pressure that had earlier slowed their own innings.

Roy towers over key spells

Roy was the match’s standout, combining power with pace to finish at a strike rate of 179 and claim MVP honours. Jordan’s control (2/23) provided the platform by restricting Sussex after their fast start, while Tom Lawes’ 2 for 29 added key breakthroughs to keep the target manageable. For Sussex, Sean Hunt’s 2 for 28 offered brief resistance, but Roy’s dominance ensured it was only a temporary check.

Sussex start, then lose grip

Sussex began with intent at 64/1 in the powerplay, built around a 73-run stand between Harrison Ward and George Thomas, and Thomas’ 58 off 27 kept them ahead of the curve. But Surrey’s bowlers hit back in the middle overs, where Sussex managed just 78/4, losing wickets that broke continuity. Chris Jordan’s 2 for 23 was pivotal in that slowdown, and despite James Coles’ 42 off 29, Sussex’s death phase (34/2) never regained the early momentum.
